Colors of Fall

I always find myself outside on these slighly brisk days of autumn. Having lived in New York state my whole life the transitions of the season are formiliar and calming. I’m warmed by the sound of crunching dried leaves under my feet as I walk around. The holiday markets are popping up in Union Square, Bryant Park and Columbus Circle as well. It all brings a sense of nostalgia to me as I’m cycling into my third holiday season in the city.

I’m getting off track. On my walk over to the market Saturday morning I decided to walk through the botanic garden instead of around it. The orange leaves over the Japanese pond was precious. As I walked I came across tons of leaves, but really only a few pine cones. Pine cones were a staple of the lawn in my childhood romping grounds. On my walk I came across one so small and precious. I decided to create a little pine cone flower with it.

Happy Fall! Winter will be here soon so I’m going to enjoy these moments while I still can. During these days I’m glad I have to be outside everyday for a few moments to get to the subway. I also did color these to have a bit of old nostalgia because fall always implants memories of my youth.

Brooklyn Reflections

Seems that reflections are following me around! Something about the crisp November days makes the water so crisp and clear. I took a walk over to the Botanic Garden to see the fall changes. With the coming of fall it was extremely calm and peaceful there. The lily pond was super reflective and bright. Strangely as I walked past all the gold fish were swimming along together following the lead fish. I’ve never before seen this happen with these kind of fish.

I also took a quick venture to Prospect Park, where I often end up when I want to enjoy nature and did some writing. These moments make me remember why I want to leave NY and how much I love nature.

Dumbo Arts Festival

A few weeks ago I headed over to the dumbo arts festival. Dumbo as usual was beautiful. There were many things happening, people crowding the streets enjoying the public displays and cool weather. My favorite pieces the foto/pods, shipping containers turned into photo galleries and placed outdoors. I love the appropriation of objects and the photos themselves had a nice variation between the artist.

For my image today is one of the last things I walked past before leaving the festival. An old man was playing some music under the colorful awning. It’s the quiet side of the festival.

From One Island To Another

In this whole summer I have ventured down to Coney Island only once. Yet after never going last year I was at least excited about seeing the new park and what the “island” had to offer different. Not much had really changed except an expansion of overpriced rides. Being a monday most good attractions were closed. We spent the majority of our day in a dark rinky arcade playing skee-ball. As well as wishing the crane machines actually grabbed toys like when we were kids. From our tickets we got a bunch of junk including some paddle balls, one broke after about 20 minutes of use.

Prospect Park pt2

I’ve been to the lake in prospect park many times. But I’ve never significantly recalled the water being so green.

Growing up next to a swamp and just down the street from a lake I feel a really deep connection with water in all its forms. Especially the dynamic green, reminds me of the muck I grew up next to and the occasions where our golden retriever would return home smelling of musky waters. The lake in Prospect Park ranged from this array of lily pads to the small green growths in the above image.

Good to See Again

It’s been a long while since I’ve had the opportunity to post. Many photo adventures need to be shared. But in correlation with finally blogging images again I will post photos from my Prospect Park walk yesterday. Walking around Prospect Park is one of my favorite past times. It’s on these calm nights that as I walk through that wilderness I remember everything I miss about living in the country. NY has people, but the trees, birds, plants and swampy muck makes me feel at home.

I even managed to find something I’d never seen before on my adventure though the old cracking paths. This beautiful overgrown pond just melted my heart, finding in the city what I’m most drawn to photographing in the country. I love the pull between man made structures and nature recapturing its space. How nature takes back when man leaves a space unattended.

More photos from my walk and other adventures to come more often! I also recently went on a beach camp trip and will be going on vacation next week 🙂

One more for the road? I loved the green on green and the odd shape of this pod that was surrounding the pond.

Picking a Path

I’ve presented myself with a question, if I could only peruse one of my hobbies more professionally, which one would it be? I love to do so many things, photograph, bake, make jewelry, and in theory gardening. I present myself with this question often but find I get lazy with my follow though to truly dig down and answer it. What do I want to be? I know I do not need to truly limit myself to one. But I need to focus my attentions more and stick with it when I do. What is my ultimate goal and how do I get there? I’ve had these questions in my mind for a while with no answer.

In the mean time summer is finally starting to happen. The other week I ventured over to the Botanic Garden and was inspired by the beauty. I know I want to get back to nature and my goals to wwoof are on the upper crust of my goals.

Secretly I do love Brooklyn. It’s taken two years but this place still captivates me. Especially the parts I notice myself walking over to at least once a week the library, the park, the botanic garden, the green market. I think its going to be a beautiful and exciting summer! And it will be a true challenge when I leave this place, when ever that will be, its taken me a while but I’m finally figured out my grove.

The top flowers are rare orchids and these bottom ones are mothers day flowers.

Holga Roll 1

Last spring I became unemployed for a second time when the theater I worked at closed suddenly. With my new freedom I decided I wanted to start exploring alternative methods of shooting photographs and also get back into some manual photography. So I purchased a holga (that is camo colored so totally cool!) Slowly over the summer I took some images and played around with my first roll. I had no idea what exactly these images were going to be. Here are some of the highlights of that roll taken while walking through prospect park over the summer.
